BMW has announced plans to introduce a hybrid version of the 2014 X5 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

According to the German carmaker, the concept has a plug-in hybrid system which features a twin-turbo four-cylinder gasoline combustion engine and a 94 hp electric motor which sources its energy from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery located underneath the load area. The batteries can be recharged from any domestic power socket.

In pure electric mode, the X5 eDrive can travel up to 30 km and achieve a top speed of 120 km/h. It averages fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 3.8-liter / 100 km (61.8 mpg US or 74.3 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of under 90 g/km.

The hybrid powertrain offers a choice of three driving modes: "the intelligent hybrid drive option for an optimum balance between sportiness and efficiency; pure electric and therefore emission-free driving; or Safe Battery mode to maintain the current battery charge."

In addition, the plug-in hybrid X5 has also received a few more unique styling features like the new roof rails, a connector for the charging cable that lights up during charging and unique 21-inch light-alloy wheels.
