Shelby GT500 successor to be called the Shelby GT350

2013 Ford Shelby GT500

Road & Track and Mustangs Daily report that the Mustang Shelby GT500 successor will actually be called the Shelby GT350.

Accordingly, the GT350 will be less powerful than the current GT500 which features a 5.8-liter V8 engine with 662 hp and 854 Nm of torque. Nothing is official, but it could be powered by a high-revving V8 that's derived from the 5.0-liter Coyote engine. Speculation suggests this engine will develop more than 450 hp.

In addition, the car is expected to be more "stripped down," but still offers all the amenities from the flagship model. It also features a number of carbon fiber components.

The Shelby GT350
will reportedly be introduced at the 2014 New York Auto Show as a 2016 model.
