Ford Australia ends manufacturing operations after 91 years

October 7 was an emotional day, as Ford ended 91 years of manufacturing in Australia. The final Falcon, Falcon Ute and Territory rolled off the production line and Ford said goodbye to proud and committed employees who contributed a great deal to the company. Despite the closing of manufacturing operations, however, Ford is building an exciting and sustainable future in Australia.

Ford helped more than 200 manufacturing employees find new jobs - 160 at Ford alone. In addition, businesses in Geelong and Broadmeadows are creating 1,500 new jobs as part of Ford’s $10 million investment in the government’s innovation and investment funds. This is all part of Ford’s significant ongoing presence in Australia and the company’s commitment to help the affected communities move forward.

Nearly 4 million of the iconic Falcons were produced in Australia after the vehicle was introduced in 1960. In all, 6 million Ford vehicles were produced in Australia, beginning in 1925 with the Model T. Though Ford’s manufacturing operations in Australia have ended, Australia is expected to continue as a research and development hub for the company.

The legacy of Ford employees and the Falcon will live on, as Ford invests more locally in Research and Development than any other automaker - $300 million this year alone. Ford also is the largest automotive employer going forward with 1,500 employees and another 500 contractors. That includes more than 1,100 designers and engineers as well as employees in advanced testing facilities across Australia.  As one of Ford’s global product development hubs, the Ford Australian team is growing to build on the innovation, creativity and know-how that is vital to the company’s future.
