The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary 911 by opening an extensive "50 Years of 911" exhibition.

The starting point of the special exhibition highlights the development stages of the 901 type as well as a replica of the car's first-ever presentation at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. In addition, film footage of the first 911 test drive will be shown. 50 stories all around the topic of the 911 will then guide the visitors through the exhibition.

More than 40 sports cars will be presented to the general public for the first time, including rare special editions, race cars and numerous prototypes. Notable highlights include a 1967 911 R, a 911 Carrera RSR, a 1990 911 Carrera Cup and an armored 911 (996) with safety glass, whose former owner was the Spanish singer Julio Iglesias.

"I personally recall the presentation of the Porsche 901 very well at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 1963," said Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Porsche Supervisory Board Chairman. "Everybody in the company was anxiously waiting to see how customers and journalists would react to the new car. But my father, Ferry Porsche, believed in the concept of the new model right from the onset."

The "50 Years of 911" exhibition will run until September 29, 2013 and the museum is offering free admittance to all 911 owners plus one accompanying person, as well as anyone born in 1963.
