Maybach 62S spotted in Vietnam

Maybach 62S

This Maybach 62S has recently been spotted in Hanoi, Vietnam. Our photographer says that it belongs to a businessman in Ninh Binh and he is also owner of two Rolls-Royce Phantom Dragon Editions in this country.

As a small reminder, the 62S is a special edition of the 62 and features an upgraded 6.0-liter V12 engine with 612 horsepower from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm and 738 ft-lb of torque from 4,800 to 5,100 rpm. It is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, allowing the car to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in 5.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 250 km/h.

Maybach to be axed

After the latter company’s sales continued to disappoint, Daimler has reportedly decided to phase out Maybach.

It seems that Mercedes wants to focus greater attention on its own brand. To be more specific, the company will reportedly offer a new S600 Pullman, which will have more potential to succeed in the luxury segment against competition from the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce than Maybach.

"We’ve come to the conclusion that it is better to cut our losses with Maybach than to continue into an uncertain future with a brand that has failed to live up to original sales expectations" said the insider.

If everything as planned, the last Maybachs will be built in early 2013.

Maybach 57S Special Edition for China

Maybach has launched the 57S Special Edition for the Chinese market.

Based on the 57S, the car is distinguished by a special red paint job, special alloys and a special interior with red stitching. Power comes from a V12 engine with 612 hp and 1000 Nm of torque.

In China, Maybach doesn’t have good sales, while Rolls-Royce and Bentley are doing much better. The company tried to win by launching both the new 62 and the new 62S in China but it didn’t help much. And now, Maybach clearly hopes the 57S Special Edition will do better.

Details are limited, but the standard 62S has a starting price of 10.7 million yuan ($1.66 million).

Mercedes is Developing a High-Performance Sedan

Mercedes is developing a high-performance four-door to compete with the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.

According to Autocar, the car will be sold alongside the CL and resemble an "über-CLS." It’s likely that it would have an even more dramatic shape than the coupe-like CLS and feature AMG engines.

Mercedes has decided to compete with Bentley and the upcoming Panamera GT of Porsche. In addition, there are rumors that the model could spawn a Maybach variant because the 62S Coupe has attracted much attention at the auto show.
