2014 Maserati Ghibli officially revealed

2014 Maserati Ghibli

Maserati has released the first official images and preliminary details about the 2014 Ghibli, ahead of its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show later this month.

Set to go on sale at the beginning of next year, the luxury sedan carries a similar shape to the larger Quattroporte and will be available with two 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engines. It will also become the first Maserati production car in history to be powered by a diesel engine, with a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel.

All engines are mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which will work together with the rear-wheel drive system or the new "Q4" all-wheel drive system.

"It is Maserati’s first saloon in this segment and reflects the company’s belief that a growing number of premium executive car buyers are looking to make an individual statement through a car that is distinctive, elegant and luxurious," said the Italian carmaker.

The 2014 Maserati Ghibli will play a significant role in the company's growth plan to sell 50,000 units annually.

New details about Maserati's new cars

We’ve had a long love-hate relationship with Maserati. We love the automaker’s cars and we hate that we can’t afford them. So, despite this topsy-turvy connection, we’ve been closely following Maserati’s plans expected over the next few years.

The auto manufacturer is planning an assembly line onslaught at the end of which the market will see five new models. Previous press releases indicated Maserati had only three new models in the pipeline. All that changes with Maserati’s recent announcements to (i) replace their Gran Turismo models and (ii) their intentions to add a brand new sports car similar to the Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-Type. All these models are expected to be released by 2015.

Harald Wester, CEO of Maserati, recently reported that the new 2014 Quattroporte will be only the first of the new models we’ll see over the next three years. This model will be almost seven inches longer than any previous generations, but it’s considered bigger in a lot more ways. The 2014 Quattroporte maxes at 523 hp at 6,800 rpm with 524 pound per foot of overboost torque ranging between 2,250 and 3,500 rpm. That’s courtesy of its bi-turbo 3.8-liter direct injected V8 engine, built by Ferrari.

Current plans also reveal an upcoming Ghibli mid-sized Sedan. That should be followed in Spring or Summer 2014 with the Levante SUV. The latter vehicle is inspired by the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Sometime during 2015 Maserati will unveil the auto that will replace both the Gran Turismo and the Gran Turismo Convertible.

In regard to that particular sports car, Maserati’s styling boss, Lorenzo Ramaciotti, revealed the new car would be more compact than the Gran Turismo coupe. The dimensions are expected to be more in line with the Jaguar XK.

The last of the new Maserati vehicles will come off the assembly line after the Gran Turismo replacement. It will be a small two-seater sports car. It is likely to be more of a GranSport mid-engine model. Of course, there have also been reports implying the new sports car would be inspired by the Alfa Romero 4C. That plan entailed engineering a larger version of the classic Italian model.

All the engines for the upcoming models are currently looking to sport brand new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 and 3.8-liter V8 engines. The engines will be built by Ferrari and ready in time for the 2014 Quattroporte. In the European models, some of these cars will carry a 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine.

The manufacturer expects these new cars to have a powerful impact on its revenues. By the middle of the decade, they are anticipating at least 50,000 units of sales annually. That’s almost 10x Maserati’s current level of sales. This will offset what has been less than exemplary sales over the last few years.

Headquartered in Modena, Italy, the Maserati line is one of the most respected and sought after luxury sports cars in the world. They are costly but still considered reasonably priced when set alongside comparable models. (Not that anyone here would know.) Maserati has been putting exciting vehicles on the road since dropping its first model at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. We’ve all got our eye on what the manufacturer plans to do between now and 2015. And beyond.

Maserati preparing Porsche 911 rival

Maserati Chicane Concept

Maserati is currently working on a Porsche 911 rival, which will play a crucial role in the company's plans to sell 50,000 units annually by 2015.

Set to launch by 2015, the mid-engined sports car will get a chassis based on the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C that will be unveiled next month at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. It could be called the GranSport and will be offered with V6 and V8 engines developed and built in collaboration with Ferrari, including a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 404 hp and a twin-turbo V8 with 550 hp.

The Italian carmaker is hoping a 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs) weight and a price tag of less than £100,000.

Maserati developing a compact crossover

Maserati Kubang SUV

According to Car & Driver, Maserati is currently developing a compact crossover to compete with the Audi Q5 and the upcoming Porsche Macan.

The magazine says the model will be more compact than the Levante, which was recently previewed by the Kubang concept, and ride on Fiat's long-wheelbase Compact U.S. Wide platform which also underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Under the hood, it will likely feature the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine as the 2014 Quattroporte.

If everything goes well, the entry-level crossover could be launched towards the end of 2015.

2014 Maserati Quattroporte engine specs revealed

2014 Maserati Quattroporte

Maserati has just released the first official details of the 2014 Quattroporte, confirming that the coupe will use Ferrari sourced V6 and V8 engines.

According to the Italian carmaker, the base engine is a Pentastar V6-based, twin-turbocharged direct-injection 3.0-liter with 404 hp at 5,500 rpm and 550 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in 4.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 285 km/h.

Meanwhile, the top of the range is a more powerful V8 twin-turbo direct-injection 3.8-liter engine that develops 523 hp at 6,500 rpm and 649 Nm or 710 Nm with overboost at 2,000 rpm. With this powerplant, the Quattroporte can rocket to 96 km/h in 4.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 307 km/h.

Both engines will be mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission which is lighter than the previous six-speed gearbox. The V8 model will be sold only with rear-wheel drive, while the V6 variant will be offered for the first time with an all-wheel drive system co-developed with Magna. Under normal driving and road conditions, this system transfers 100 percent of torque to the rear wheels, but if necessary it can split as much as 50 percent to the front axle.

The 2014 Maserati Quattroporte will make its official debut at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show in January.

2014 Maserati Quattroporte to get twin-turbo V6 and V8

2014-Maserati-Quattroporte

New details are starting to emerge about the redesigned 2014 Maserati Quattroporte, ahead of its unveil at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Auto Edizione says that the sixth generation Quattroporte will be available with two engine options that have aluminum construction, direct injection and twin turbochargers. The base twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine produces 410 hp and will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in five seconds and hit a top speed of 285 km/h. With the optional all-wheel drive system, it can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 284 km/h.

Meanwhile, the top of the lineup engine will be a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 with 530 hp. This will reportedly enable the sports car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 307 km/h.

2014 Maserati Quattroporte officially revealed

2014-Maserati-Quattroporte

Maserati has just released the first images and details of the 2013 Quattroporte, ahead of its public debut in January at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. The luxury sedan is part of a plan to boost sales from around 6, 500 units annually to a staggering 50,000 by 2015.

According to the Italian carmaker, the sixth generation Quattroporte will be longer and lighter compared to the outgoing version. It will grow in length to around 5,200 mm from the current 5,052 mm and could be based on a new steel monocoque chassis. Thanks to the use of more aluminum and other weigh-saving materials, the kerb weight will be kept at 1,940 kg (down by 50 kg).

On the outside, the styling is purely evolutionary, giving a more masculine appearance. "Some of the elements characterising the previous model have been purposely maintained: the front grille, the three side vents and the triangular C pillar. At the same time new style and functional features have been introduced: the strong belt line that runs through the entire side of the car giving the new Quattroporte a look and feel that is at once muscular and elegant, with frameless doors and three side windows", said Lorenzo Ramaciotti, Head of Maserati Design Centre.

"Inside, the design of the Quattroporte aims at essentiality, stressing the simplicity of lines and the full functionality of the on-board instrumentation. Functional elements are blended with soft quality surfaces made of prestigious woods and refined leathers," Romaciotti adds.

At its launch, the new Quattroporte will be powered by a Ferrari-made 4.7-liter V8 engine with 530 hp. Mated to a ZF automatic transmission, the engine will get a power hike along with improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. Specially, it will eventually be joined by optional all-wheel-drive.

Maserati GranTurismo MC GT3 revealed

Maserati-GranTurismo-MC-GT3

Maserati has recently introduced the GranTurismo MC GT3 at the Fiat Industrial Village Motorfest in Turin, Italy. It has managed to win race 1 at the previous Superstars GT Sprint at Italian Autodromo Di Vallelunga with Alessandro Pier Guidi behind the wheel. This race was just a preparation for the upcoming Superstars GT race in Pergusa set to begin about a week from now. Maserati hasn’t made an appearance in this series since 2004 after losing its license.

Based on the MC Stradale street-version, the racer car adds a more racing-inspired appearance with a new front spoiler lip, new side skirts, a rear diffuser and a rear adjustable wing which will provide stability during high-speed racing. Carbon fiber continues to feature on the doors, roof, front and rear bonnet.

Motivation is provided by an aspirated V8 engine with four-valve technology and wet sump lubrication producing 495 hp at 7,500 rpm and 510 Nm of torque at 4,750 rpm, mated to a Sadev six-speed sequential dog gearbox with oil cooling.
